Just when you think you have seen all of Zihuatanejo – BAM! It hits you. Escape for a day, get the feeling of a deserted beach and your senses are back in check. Or, at least, just escape.
After a couple of visits to Barra de Potosí, I was reminded of the reason I came to this part of Mexico, the serenity. As the Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa area continues to grow, so do the crowds. To really ‘get away’, Barra de Potosí is your answer. Located at the far end of Playa Larga, Barra de Potosí is a mere 30 minutes away. Simply head for the airport and less than a block from the entrance there is a new dirt road on your right. Follow this road for about 15 kilometers (you will end up driving parallel to the water for a good stretch). The dirt road will turn into pavement (I use the term loosely) and you are there. One of the first restaurants on your right will be Enramada Nayito – one of the most tranquil spots on earth. Make the restaurant your home base, go explore the lagoon or rent a horse and take it for a ride for a couple of hours. Pancho, your host, will be more than happy to help you with any information you might want. Boat rides are available for a small fee. This is a beach not to be missed by those who want total relaxation. Plenty of hammocks are rocking in the wind, asking you to climb right in with a cold beer. The prices are very reasonable and the food is good.
